Should it be styled as a machine or a process or both?  How do you intend to use the patent that ultimately issues and against whom?  What patents and other defenses might that party have? These decisions are driven of course by your product, your market and your competitors, including how the products of your competitors operate and what intellectual property protection they have.  An application can be filed and a patent issued without ever asking and answering these critical questions that give the patent value for YOUR business.  A sole focus, as many patent attorneys have, on merely writing an application that describes your product may miss the important points entirely, even if a patent does ultimately issue.
